Mayflower by Nathaniel Philbrick
This is the story of the famous Mayflower pilgrims who settled in the United States . The book debunks some of the myths that surround this landmark event in American history and gives a balanced and easily read assessment of the Pilgrim landings .
While there is little by way of spiritual benefit in this book for those who have an interest in history this is a good read .

Men of Destiny by Peter Masters
This book contains fourteen thumbnail biographies of notable christians . These include men as diverse as Martin Luther , the great reformer , and Jean Henri Dunant , the founder of the Red Cross .
Masters relates the lives of these men in his usual easy style and the book is a delight to read .
Such is the brevity of the accounts , this is a book which can be read as part of your personal devotions .

Hard To Believe by John MacArthur
The advertising blurb describes this book as an "... unflinching , unapologetic treatise on the modern tendency to alter the true message of Christianity ... " . In truth , MacArthur tackles the so-called seeker sensitive movement and largely succeeds in exposing that movement as a serious departure from the faith .
This book is full of biblical truth ( and a little error here and there ) brilliantly explained and with a few quibbles aside is a worthwhile read .

Life in the Spirit - Martin Lloyd Jones
This is a tremendous series of sermons which Jones preached in the 1950's slightly edited for publication . They constitute an exposition of our Lord's prayer in John 17 .
I read this book as part of my daily devotions and found it a real blessing to my own soul . The section on sanctification is marvellous and Jones' inimicable style makes the book a delight to read .
I cannot recommend this book too highly . Get it .

The Power And The Glory : Inside the Dark Heart of John Paul II's Vatican by David Yallop
This is a devastating critique of Karol Wojtyla's papacy and an irredeemably corrupt Vatican . Yallop debunks the many myths that have surrounded Wojtyla's career and reveals a deeply flawed individual .
Moreover he exposes the Church of Rome's links to organised crime and various South American dictators and reveals the deeply malevolent influence the Vatican exercises in world politics .
However the most shocking and saddening part of this book is the section on the child abuse scandals which have rocked worldwide Romanism . Yallop details the enormous scale of this crime against the most vulnerable and the equally enormous cover up by the Church authorities . His exposure of the so-called secret system which ensured the protection of paedophile priests and the ongoing abuse of children will shock and appal in equal manner .
Necessarily , with the subject matter , David Yallop deals with , this is not a book for the faint-hearted , nonetheless it is a very important and well-written work . It makes a mockery of the gushing praise that Wojtyla has received from many clerics and commentators ( including our very own little reprobate Alf McCreery ) and shines a searching light on the dark heart of the papacy .

God's Unfailing Purpose , The Message of Daniel - Michael P.V. Barrett
Michael Barrett, using the Book of Daniel as his source material, establishes a thoroughly Biblical theology of time . He demonstrates beyond question that our times are in God's hands and that past ,present , and future history are but the outworking of God's holy and sovereign will .
This book is recommended with one small caviat - the price . £8-99 for a less than 200 pge paperback is seriously over-priced .

The Truth War - John MacArthur
MacArthur deals with the issue of post-modernism and its detrimental effect upon the Church . In his usual , highly readable style he disects the unscriptural notions that lie behind the so-called Emerging Church movement and argues for a strictly Biblical response to this latest departure from the faith.
This is an important book which discerning and serious Christians should read and digest . Highly recommended .

Half-hours With William Hendriksen
Little of interest here - better off with some of his commentaries . Although I would caution readers not to get carried with some of Hendriksen's eschatological notions.

Be Sure - Seven Rules For Public Speaking by Rev Ian Paisley
A useful little book that Rev Paisley penned about twenty years ago . It gives a brief overview of the basics of public speaking and is worthy of the attention of those who are apprentices at this trade .
Personally I have found it immensely helpful .

The Works Of Andrew Gray
Dr Joel Beeke said of this book " There is no substitute for reading Gray himself. He will warm your soul , convict you of slothfulness , and urge you to godliness . He is always full of spirit and life . Unlike many collections of Works , Gray is thoroughly readable from the opening series of sermons on "The Mystery of Faith" to the closing letter addressed from his deathbed to Sir Archibald Johnston . In this volume you will find no abstruse theological debates or impractical messages . Gray is a gem - read him from beginning to end ."
For my own part I found the sermons on The Spiritual Warfare and Spiritual Contentment particularly useful .

The Lives of Early Methodist Preachers - edited by Thomas Jackson
This three volume set gives accounts of the lives of over 50 of the preachers who were contempories with and worked under the leadership of the great Methodist evangelist John Wesley . Their life stories are an inspiring tale of fervent devotion to Christ , genuine Christian piety , and abundant labours for the Lord .
This is a set which deserves a wide reading among Christian people generally and full-time Christian workers particularly .

A Guide To Prayer by Isaac Watts
This little book is intended to be a practical guide to the great business of prayer . As such it will prove useful , particularly to those who are young in the faith . While I felt Mr Watts sometimes gave a few too many rules, nonetheless I am happy to recommend this work.
available from banner of truth bookstore see link .

An Exposition Of The Westminster Confession of Faith by Robert Shaw
Sinclair Ferguson wrote that this work " provides a miniature course in theology . More than that , it explains , expounds and applies the whole gospel in a way that will explain the message of Scripture , illumine understanding , stimulate worship and strengthen Christian living . A course of private study with Shaw as teacher and companion will equip us to be intelligent and capable witnesses to Jesus Christ in the modern world - able to give a reason for the hope that the gospel gives us . This is a considerable return for the modest investment of the price of one book and the expenditure of a little time and study ."
Christians who are serious about their faith will find in this book food for their soul . I recommend it to all .

Not A Chance - RC Sproul
Sproul ,as the title blurb explains, probes "The Myth of Chance in Modern Science and Cosmology" . He carefully dissects and destroys the notion that the universe " exploded into being " and cogently argues that "chance" has no logical , philosophical or scientific foundation .
This is not a religious book but it has obvious application to the field of Christian apologetics . For those interested in the subject this work is recommended.
